The clothes moth (Tineola Bisselliella) is a common household textile pest. If you are finding holes in items of clothing such as woollen jumpers or silk scarves, it is most likely that you are suffering from a clothes moth infestation. It is the Tineola Bisselliella larvae that causes the damage as they feed on the natural fibre (keratin) that is present in clothing, causing irreplaceable and costly damage.
You will start noticing clothes moths appear in Spring/Summer as the weather starts to warm up. But as homes are now well insulated and heated, they are an all year-round pest. Female moths will lay eggs in small, dark areas and will then hatch in around 10 days into larvae. The larvae will then feed on the keratin found in clothes and will do so for up to 90 days. The larvae then evolve into a cocoon and will hatch into an adult within 10 days. Once an adult, the moth will live for up to 30 days and will begin the cycle again.
