Does cedar keep moths away from old clothes?

Does cedar keep moths away from old clothes?

Want to protect your Christmas jumpers? As far back as the Ancient Greek era, humans were aware that cedar wood was a natural insect repellent. The oil infused into the wood is what repels clothes moths from laying their eggs in wool and other natural fabrics.

The oil in cedar wood is made up of chemicals called sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, which let off a woody, ruinous, resinous smell, according to a 2002 chemical report in Aromatherapy Times. This prime chemical is likely responsible for the moth-deterring. However, the oil is only effective for as long as the scent lasts, which isn’t very long at all. This is because the smell evaporates, and its scent wears off over time, meaning the concentration decreases. When it has decreased, this gives the moths an ideal breeding and feeding space.

Most people think that it is the adult moths that do the most damage to your goods, when it is in fact the larvae. When the eggs hatch, the new-born larvae eat through fabrics like there is no tomorrow. You will usually find items with damage in dark, undisturbed areas, such as lofts and attics, as the moths hate the light.
