Clothes Moths: Silent Fabric Pests

Identification and Damage

Two species of clothes moths are commonly found in UK homes, wreaking havoc on natural fibres such as wool, upholstery, carpets, and furs:

  1. Common Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella):
    • Appearance: Adults have golden-coloured wings held back behind their bodies. Their wingspan ranges from 12 to 17 mm.
    • Larvae: White, reaching up to 13 mm, with a brown head capsule. They feed on keratin found in natural fibres.
    • Damage: It’s the larvae that cause the harm, not the adult moths.
  2. Case-Bearing Clothes Moth (Tinea pellionella):
    • Appearance: Adults have silver grey-brown wings held roof-like behind their bodies, with a wingspan of 9 to 16 mm.
    • Larvae: White, up to 12 mm, with a brown head capsule and one simple eye (ocelli).
    • Unique Feature: These larvae spin tunnel-like cases from silk and surrounding materials, which they carry for camouflage and protection.

Life Cycle and Infestations

  • Both moths follow a similar life cycle.
  • Infestations: Clothes moths thrive in low light levels and dirty fabrics containing essential nutrients and moisture.
  • Prevention and Control:
    • Regularly inspect and clean stored fabrics.
    • Use natural or chemical methods to prevent infestations.
    • Consider cedar wood hangers or breathable fabric covers to deter moths.

Remember, it’s the larvae, not the adult moths, that eat and destroy our beloved fabrics. So keep an eye out for these tiny but persistent pests! 🦋🧺
