Both moths and butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera, but there are many physical and behavioural differences between the two.
With regards to their behaviour, butterflies are diurnal (active during the day) whereas moths are nocturnal. When resting, butterflies tend to rest their wings back, while moths flatten them against their body.
The pupal stage is different too. The moth will make cocoons that are wrapped in silk coverings, whereas butterflies form chrysalises which are hard and smooth.
Their wings are opposites, with butterflies having vibrant, colourful decorated wings and moths being plainer and simpler.
These are just usual traits within moths and butterflies. The Madagascan moth sports colourful wings and is active in the day time.
